UA AMONG TOP PRODUCERS FOR STUDENT FULBRIGHT AWARDS – For the fourth time in five years, UA was recognized as a Top Producing Institution for Fulbright U.S. Student Awards. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the premier educational exchange program of the United States Department of State. The Fulbright Award offers grants for independent study and research and for English teaching assistantships overseas. The highly competitive program selects about 1,900 award recipients from more than 11,000 applicants each year. UA BLACK HISTORY MONTH: ‘AFRICAN AMERICANS AND THE VOTE’ — This year celebrates the 150th anniversary of both the 15th Amendment, which gave black men and other disenfranchised Americans the right to vote, and women getting the right to vote. In celebration of those anniversaries, and looking toward the 2020 presidential election, UA’s Black History Month observance is themed “African Americans and The Vote.” For a full list of events, which are free unless otherwise noted, go here. UADM’s BAMATHON SUPPORTS CHILDREN’S OF ALABAMA – The UA Dance Marathon will host BAMAthon, a 13.1-hour long dance marathon, Feb. 15 starting at 10 a.m. at the Ferguson Center. BAMAthon, UADM’s largest event of the year, will unite UA students and Miracle Kids to raise proceeds for Children’s of Alabama, a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in Birmingham. CYBER SECURITY SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE TO UA STUDENTS – UA will provide scholarships through a national program aimed at recruiting future cyber security professionals interested in government service. The University received a five-year $3.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to provide scholarships to UA students interested in pursuing government careers in cyber security. The scholarships are offered through the CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service, which is supported by the NSF and the Department of Homeland Security. The program provides a full-tuition scholarship along with a stipend – $25,000 annually for undergraduate students and $34,000 annually for graduate students. ‘STEEL DAY’ PROVIDES STUDENTS INSIGHT INTO STEEL INDUSTRY — UA’s department of metallurgical and materials engineering is hosting Steel Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 10 in H.M. Comer Hall’s McAbee Grand Foyer. This event will give students the opportunity to network with representatives from the steel industry and learn about steel-related degree programs offered at UA. Lab tours will be given. Industry representatives from Nucor Steel, Arcelor-Mittal/Nippon Steel Corp., U.S. Steel, SSAB America, Steel Dynamics, SMS Group, ACIPCO, Scot Forge, and Carpenter Technology Corp. will attend. Dr. Nilesh Kumar, UA assistant professor of metallurgical and materials engineering, will be available for media interviews from 1-2 p.m. Feb. 10. UA LAW SCHOOL SYMPOSIUM ON RED FLAG LAWS – UA’s School of Law is hosting a symposium from 9 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, in the Bedsole Moot Court Room. The symposium, Seeing Red: Risk-Based Gun Regulation, will address many of the most prominent issues and concerns with red-flag legislation, including constitutional and due process concerns, the importance of language when discussing mental health and red flags, the success and efficacy of red-flag laws, the differences among reporting standards in different states and proposed red-flag legislation in Alabama.
