Building Bama: Aquatic Center Reopens January 31, 2020 Written by Bryant Welbourne 1 min read TwitterFacebookLinkedInEmail UA’s newly renovated Aquatic Center hosted a grand reopening ceremony Jan. 30. “Our student-athletes can now train at an even more advanced level, and we look forward to hosting meets in our upgraded competition facilities,” said UA President Stuart R. Bell. “From the time it opened in 1981, the Don Gambril Olympic Pool has been considered one of the best in the country with national, U.S. Open and even world records being set here,” said UA Director of Athletics Greg Byrne. “Today, we celebrate an overall facility that has risen to meet the level of the pool it surrounds.” UA System Chancellor Finis St. John IV and President Bell talk to a student-athlete at the reopening ceremony. The 50-meter aquatics training and competition pool was renovated as part of the project. Diving boards and platforms were also renovated. Swimming and diving student-athletes will benefit from new locker rooms and training rooms. The 25-meter pool was converted to an outdoor pool.
