UA holds United Way Campaign Celebration

United Way of West Alabama just finished its annual fundraiser at the University of Alabama and they held a big celebration today, announcing how much they were able to raise. They kicked off in August and have raised $483,807.36! United Way is a team of almost 1-thousand volunteers that help raise and distribute funds to our local agencies and initiatives.
Bryant-Denny Stadium construction to start next week

Next week marks the start of a major project that’s going to reshape the home of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Bryant-Denny Stadium is on the verge of undergoing a $106 Million renovation, a project that includes new sky boxes, elevators and stairways.

$3.8 million NSF grant funds creation of multi-state invasive plant consortium at UL Lafayette

Invasive plant species threaten biodiversity, harm crops, restructure ecosystems, promote diseases and damage infrastructure. Their havoc annually costs $34 billion in the United States alone. Despite this, little is known about how they become invasive and why. In addition to UL Lafayette, the consortium will include researchers at South Dakota State, Wichita State and West Virginia universities, and the University of Alabama. Research hubs at each institution will focus on different invasive plant species.
UA Theatre goes big for “The Importance of Being Earnest”

The first thing an audience member might notice when they walk into the Marian Gallaway Theatre for “The Importance of Being Earnest” is the giant gramophone that looms on the stage above the audience. Its wooden base is large enough for the actors to dance inside while four footmen rotate the entire structure. The huge, twirling victrola was dreamed up by director Seth Panitch and guest scenic designer David Harwell as the perfect backdrop for Oscar Wilde’s comedic play about love, alter egos and tragic misinformation.

The University of Alabama Department of Theatre and Dance will present the Oscar Wilde comedy “The Importance of Being Earnest” this weekend. Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, closing with a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday at the Marian Gallaway Theatre. The play is about Gwendolyn Fairfax and Cecily Cardew, who believe they are both in love with the same man, Earnest; a small fib turns into a tangled web of emotions.
