UA TO HONOR VICTIMS OF 9/11 ATTACKS WITH STAIR CLIMB – UA’s Police Department and its Office of Veteran and Military Affairs will host a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 8-11 a.m. in Coleman Coliseum. UA EARLY COLLEGE GROWS ENROLLMENT, COURSE OFFERINGS – UA Early College began in 2009 with just 177 high school students taking courses for high school and college credit. This year, the innovative program will enroll nearly 2,000 students, with more than 80 percent from the state of Alabama. The course offerings for dual-credit have quadrupled in that span, too. VOTING RIGHTS SPEAKER SERIES BEGINS THURSDAY – UA’s School of Social Work has created “Own Your Vote,” a speaker series to highlight voting rights and equal access. John Paul Taylor, voting rights fellow of the Southern Poverty Law Center, will discuss his work in overcoming systematic challenges to vulnerable populations in the series’ first of four lunch-and-learns Sept. 12. BLOUNT SCHOLARS PROGRAM CELEBRATES 20 YEARS — The Blount Scholars Program, which was established in 1999 following a $7 million gift from former U.S. Postmaster General Winton Blount, will celebrate its 20th anniversary Sept. 13-14. Alumni from across the nation will return to campus for the celebration. The program is a selective living and learning community featuring an interdisciplinary curriculum focused on the liberal arts. It has grown in recent years, regularly enrolling more than 100 students each year. BUY FOR RISE FUNDRAISER – UA’s RISE Center will host its annual BUY for RISE Fundraiser Sept. 13-14. New items from dozens of local retailers will be offered at deep discounts during the sale. The charity sale and silent auction is the school’s second largest fundraiser of the year. Money raised helps fund the school’s programs. SHARING OUR LEGACY DANCE THEATRE TO PERFORM — Sharing Our Legacy Dance Theatre will perform at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa Saturday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m. as part of the ongoing Realizing the Dream performing arts series. The performance is free. The student group uses art to highlight stories. Created at the University of Delaware, the group is under the direction of Dr. Lynnette Young Overby. The performance brings attention to Mary Ann Shadd Cary, the first African American woman newspaper editor in North America. The group will conduct a workshop for Hillcrest students Friday, Sept. 13. The events are hosted by the Realizing the Dream Committee, comprised of Stillman College, Shelton State Community College, the Tuscaloosa Southern Christian Leadership Conference and UA.
