Key Changes Coming for Open Enrollment 2019

Key Changes Coming for Open Enrollment 2019

The University of Alabama will be conducting an active open enrollment Nov. 1–15. Every benefits-eligible employee must act by electing or declining health, dental or vision insurance coverages and a flexible spending or health savings account. Selections must be made through BenefitFocus linked in myBama.

During active open enrollment, no action means no coverage. Employees who fail to act by Nov. 15 will not have coverage effective Jan. 1, 2020, and must wait until the next open enrollment period to elect coverage, unless a qualifying life event occurs.

Active enrollment provides an opportunity for employees to consider the wide variety of benefits offered. Active enrollment also ensures that UA continues to comply with Affordable Care Act requirements to offer coverage to at least 95% of full-time employees.

New Benefits

Employees will have several new benefit offerings available to them, including:

  • A short-term disability plan from The Standard Insurance.
  • A new autism therapy benefit for Applied Behavior Analysis.
  • Teladoc, a 24/7 telemedicine company.
  • Livongo, a diabetes disease management program.

Choice in Medical Plans

Employees will continue to have a choice in medical plans between the Preferred Provider Organization, known as a PPO, or the High Deductible Health Plan, commonly referred to as HDHP, paired with a health savings account option. The new HDHP has proven to be a popular choice – 18.5% of employees selected the HDHP during last year’s open enrollment.
