Female CEOs more likely to face activists, dismissal; defenses needed

Activist shareholders are significantly likelier to target companies led by female chief executive officers than their male counterparts, and female CEOs face a greater likelihood of dismissal, according to recent studies. “Dismissing the CEO is usually viewed as evidence of good corporate governance as it suggests that the board is taking its monitoring role seriously, however our research reveals there are invisible, but serious, gender biases in how the board evaluates CEOs and its decision to retain or fire particular CEOs,” said Dr. Sandra Mortal, one of the report’s authors and associate professor at the University of Alabama Culverhouse College of Business.

Historian Daniel Davis said he’s learned two things over the years. First, he believes any day on a battlefield is better than a day in the office. He and other members of the community recently had the opportunity to visit the Civil War battlefield at Fort Henderson in Athens … ABT is paying to have the signs created. It is also working with The University of Alabama and the ALCA to designate a conservation easement on the Trinity-Fort Henderson Complex to prevent development that would be detrimental to the historic area.

There are now at least 80 university-affiliated continuing-care retirement — also known as life-plan — communities, according to Ziegler and Company, an investment bank that specializes in senior housing and education. In addition to Vi at Palo Alto, these communities include Kendal at Oberlin, University Place at Purdue, Lasell Village at Lasell College, Capstone Village at the University of Alabama, Woodlands at Furman University, Oak Hammock at the University of Florida, Holy Cross Village near Notre Dame, and St. Mary’s Court at George Washington University.
HBO may showcase UA football program

ESPN confirmed that HBO is negotiating with The University of Alabama. The show would essentially be a college version of its popular “hard knocks” show, which is a reality sports documentary that focuses on the NFL and its teams. We’ll have more information as this story develops.
New LED lights installed at Bryant-Denny Stadium

Believe it or not, Bryant-Denny stadium could be even more crimson this upcoming football season. The Alabama athletic director took to twitter to announce new l-Ed lights that were installed. In June The University of Alabama board of trustees approved the updated plans for the football stadium renovation increasing the stadium’s budget by more than 15-million dollars.
ICE blames ‘political rhetoric’ for violence against offices as immigration tensions rise

Although authorities have not yet determined who fired gunshots at two Immigrations and Customs Enforcement offices in San Antonio, ICE officials are already assigning some blame to the activists and politicians who have stirred up outrage at the agency for its role in implementing President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda. “The Global Terrorism Database and Southern Poverty Law Center data do indicate upticks in terrorism and hate crimes respectively,” said Erin Kearns, an assistant professor of criminology and criminal justice at The University of Alabama.

Endowment fund signed to support LGBTQ+ students

After realizing that the University of Alabama did not have an alumni group that represented the LGBTQ+ community, UA alumni Will Thomas and Chase Sanders vowed to make one. In September 2018, Thomas and Sanders officially created the LGBTQ+ Alumni Association. Since the association was founded, Thomas and Sanders have started to raise money for an endowment fund, which was approved on July 12.
