TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Supply Store is selling #BeLikeWalt merchandise to support UA’s Walt Gary Scholarship in Special Education that was recently created in memory of the longtime Crimson Tide superfan and former employee of 15 years.
Gary, who was born with Down syndrome, was a fixture at the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility for many years. His famous score predictions and special bond with Crimson Tide football coaches and student-athletes were highlighted in recent years by ESPN and Southern Living magazine. Gary died June 6.
“When we were notified that the Walt Gary Scholarship in Special Education was created, our staff wanted to continue Walt’s legacy,” said Bernadette Chavira-Trull, director of the UA Supply Store. “We decided to sell a couple of products where 100% of the profits from the sale of the merchandise will benefit the scholarship. This fundraising project would not have been possible without the support of the Gary family and UA.”
The Walt Gary Scholarship in Special Education was established by the Gary family following Walt’s death. The scholarship will provide educational opportunities to those majoring in special education at the University.
The Supe Store is currently selling #BeLikeWalt t-shirts in adult and children’s sizes, and will sell buttons in the near future. T-shirts can be purchased in-store or online.
“It’s been a very sad time for us,” said Chavira-Trull. “We all have great Walt stories and love sharing them with each other. Personally, I learned a lot from Walt and will be forever grateful.”
