First black student earns honorary doctorate from UA

Moments before she was to receive her latest recognition at the University of Alabama on Friday, Autherine Lucy Foster reflected on how her story and the Capstone’s have intertwined for the past 60 years. “I sat down last night, and when I thought about it, I was crying. The tears were just rolling down my eyes because it is so different and so unique for me to be able to come to such a university as this. That is a wonderful campus out there,” Foster said. Foster received an honorary doctorate of humane letters on Friday during the first of UA’s five spring 2019 commencement ceremonies this weekend. It was the latest recognition for the 89-year-old, who was the first black student to attend the university.

LEND A HAND: Grant will help first-generation students at UA

The Coca-Cola Foundation will continue its support for the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholars program at the University of Alabama with a new four-year grant award of $1 million. The new grant will fund the program through 2022. The program was first established at UA in 2006 with an initial $1 million gift. Since that time, the Coca-Cola Foundation has awarded $4 million to support first-generation scholars at Alabama.

80 Student-Athletes graduate from UA

It’s graduation day at The Capstone, and amongst the thousands of UA graduates were 80 Alabama student athletes. The group included 14 All-Americans, 3 NCAA Champions, and 4 Academic All-Americans. In addition, 15 of the 80 graduates were master’s degrees. Alabama football saw 10 players receive degrees, including Marlon Humphrey, who completed his degree after leaving early for the NFL draft in 2017. The 80 spring graduates join the 34 December grads as Alabama alum.
UA MBA students travel to South Africa
