UA to honor Autherine Lucy Foster with honorary doctorate
Tuscaloosa News – May 2
The first black student to attend the University of Alabama will receive an honorary doctoral degree during Friday graduation ceremonies in Tuscaloosa. Autherine Lucy Foster, 89, will receive a doctor of humane letters degree at the 4:30 p.m. commencement exercises at Coleman Coliseum. “I love the University of Alabama, and it is an honor to be recognized in this way,” said Foster in a news release from UA. ” I am thankful for opportunities such as this, which allow us to talk about the past while looking to the future.”

I haven’t got any of my own, so I can’t attest to the accuracy of that, but I do have a cat — so I can relate to how confusing such an experience might be … But fret not, parents around the world, for science comes to the rescue. A new study from the University of Alabama reports that children, particularly those at preschool age, are probably attracted to generic objects because they make for more versatile toys.

A long-time Alabama curator is at the center of one of the Southeast’s largest art competitions. Paul Barrett, well known for curating exhibitions around the state and throughout the South, is the guest curator for this year’s ArtFields, a nine-day art festival and competition in Lake City, S.C. … Sculpture artist and University of Alabama Professor Craig Wedderspoon’s “Oval” is currently on display at ArtFields. . . . . Barrett also oversaw installation of ArtField’s public art program, a selection of work that set to remain in city after the festival. For the program, Barrett selected pieces from sculpture artist Jamey Grimes.Grimes, who teaches at the University of Alabama, constructed a massive sculpture illustration complete with LED lights.
