Results of Workplace Experience Survey Show Strengths, Opportunities

A survey of UA faculty and staff has uncovered successes and provided opportunities for improvement as the community seeks greatness.

Results from the UA Workplace Experience Survey, titled Chime In!, are available for stakeholders. A recent overview led by Richard Boyer of ModernThink, the company that developed and analyzed the survey, demonstrated that pride in the institution and quality of facilities received the highest positive feedback on the survey. The areas of communication and shared governance offer the most opportunity.

The survey represents a step forward in UA’s Strategic Plan as it relates to the pillar of achieving work-life balance.

“The survey gives us a sense of where we all are,” Boyer said.

The 15 areas survey questions addressed are:

  • Job Satisfaction/Support
  • Policies, Resources and Efficiency
  • Faculty, Administration and Staff Relations
  • Teaching Environment
  • Shared Governance
  • Communication
  • Professional Development
  • Pride
  • Collaboration
  • Compensation, Benefits and Work/Life Balance
  • Supervisors/Department Chairs
  • Fairness
  • Facilities
  • Senior Leadership
  • Respect and Appreciation

The survey achieved a response rate of 47 percent — 3,256 responses overall. ModernThink compared results at UA to similar surveys taken at southern peer institutions.

Boyer outlined a three-pronged approach: conducting the survey, communicating the results and developing responses and actions that will move UA from “good” to “great.”

“We’re solution-oriented,” Boyer said. “What we’re doing is moving forward.”
