RESEARCHERS STUDYING 3-D PRINTING SCRAP METAL FOR MILITARY – Engineering researchers at UA are using an innovative method to 3-D print metal to examine how the military could print metal parts in the field using recycled metal. TOUR RENOVATED DINING, ACADEMIC BUILDINGS, NEW RESIDENCE HALL — This month, UA will open a new Freshman Residence Hall and re-open Lakeside Dining and H.M. Comer halls after extensive renovations. STUDENTS BEGIN EARLY MOVE-IN FOR SORORITY RECRUITMENT – More than 2,200 freshmen women are expected to move into their residence halls beginning Wednesday, Aug. 8 before UA’s sorority recruitment begins Saturday, Aug. 11. COLLEGE OF NURSING NAMED CENTER OF EXCELLENCE UA’s Capstone College of Nursing was recently selected as a National League for Nursing Center of Excellence, a designation that was given to only 16 nursing programs nationwide. The College was recognized for advancing the science of nursing education. The criteria for this designation is based upon research, innovation in curriculum design, enhanced student learning and faculty contributions. DANCE IN SCOTLAND — The Yonder Contemporary Dance Company, a collective in UA’s department of theatre and dance, is presenting a 50-minute concert titled “IRL” during the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. The performances are running Aug. 4-10. Yonder’s “IRL” involves 15 dance majors, overseen by Sarah M. Barry, UA associate professor of dance. They are collaborating with five student composers from UA’s School of Music, who are overseen by Dr. Amir Zaheri, assistant professor of composition. The collaboration also includes a media specialist from UA’s department of advertising and public relations, overseen by Mark Barry, director of creative advertising specialization. HONORS COLLEGE ACTION – Freshmen and returning UA students in the Honors College will perform weeklong service projects from Monday, Aug. 13, through Friday, Aug. 17 at a variety of locations. As part of Alabama Action, 165 freshman participants and 36 student leaders will work at Holt Elementary School and Collins-Riverside Middle School. A media opportunity will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m Thursday, Aug. 16, at Holt Elementary School, where students will work both indoors and outdoors. In addition, as part of Outdoor Action, students will work the morning of Thursday, Aug. 16, at Hurricane Creek Park. BLACKBURN INSTITUTE TO HOST GEORGE WILL – The Blackburn Institute’s 2018 Annual Symposium, “Navigating Change: Governing, Leading and Advocating,” will be Friday, Aug. 24, and Saturday, Aug. 25. Columnist George F. Will will speak as part of the symposium at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, in the Ferguson Student Center Ballroom.
