UA TO HOLD SUMMER COMMENCEMENT – UA will hold its summer commencement ceremony Saturday, Aug. 4, at Coleman Coliseum. Nearly 1,500 degrees are scheduled to be awarded. Additionally, C. Ray Hayes, who will leave his post as a chancellor of the UA System at the end of July, will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. SENSE THEATRE TAKES NEXT STEP IN ASD INTERVENTION TRIAL – Researchers with UA’s SENSE Theatre program, an autism spectrum disorder intervention trial that blends theater into treatment, has assembled a cohort of 10 participants with ASD and 10 neurotypical youth from the community who will serve as peer mentors in the program. The peer mentors, mostly high school students, will be trained for their roles Aug. 3-4 at Tuscaloosa Academy, where the performance components of the program will be held. Reporters are invited to attend the training at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3 at Tuscaloosa Academy, where Dr. Susan White, site investigator of the program, and Dr. Blythe Corbett, Vanderbilt professor and originator of SENSE Theatre, will facilitate training. COLLEGE OF NURSING NAMED CENTER OF EXCELLENCE – UA’s Capstone College of Nursing was recently selected as a National League for Nursing Center of Excellence, a designation that was given to only 16 nursing programs nationwide. The College was specifically recognized for advancing the science of nursing education. The criteria for this designation is based upon research, innovation in curriculum design, enhanced student learning and faculty contributions to the science of nursing education. LANGUAGE AWARDS Lawrence Monocello, a doctoral student in anthropology from Erie, Pennsylvania, will study Korean in Gwangju, South Korea. HORN OF PLENTY — Joshua Williams, first-place winner of last year’s professional division of the International Horn Competition of America, will be a featured artist headlining the 50th International Horn Society Summer Symposium in Muncie, Indiana, July 30 through Aug. 5. Williams, a 26-year-old Tuscaloosa native who’s entering the last year of his doctorate of musical arts at UA, will be one of 10 headline artists featured in the symposium. DANCE IN SCOTLAND — The Yonder Contemporary Dance Company, a collective in UA’s department of theatre and dance, will present a 50-minute concert titled “IRL” during the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. The performances will run Aug. 4-10. Yonder’s “IRL” involves 15 dance majors, overseen by Sarah M. Barry, UA associate professor of dance. They are collaborating with five student composers from UA’s School of Music, who are overseen by Dr. Amir Zaheri, assistant professor of composition. The collaboration also includes a media specialist from UA’s department of advertising and public relations, overseen by Mark Barry, director of creative advertising specialization.
