UA Joins Atmospheric Research Group

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama was recently accepted into the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, or UCAR, a national organization focused on research and training in the atmospheric and related Earth system sciences.

“Joining UCAR will provide greater opportunities for our researchers to team together with outside agencies to provide forward-thinking solutions and leading-edge education in the area of atmospheric research,” Dr. Carl A. Pinkert, UA vice president for research and economic development.

UCAR is a consortium of 117 universities and colleges across North America and manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research with sponsorship by the National Science Foundation. Through its community programs, UCAR supports and extends the capabilities of its academic consortium.

Researchers across the UA campus work in this area including those in engineering disciplines and the natural sciences.

“The accomplishments and interdisciplinary strengths of our science and engineering faculty in remote sensing, hydrological sciences, environmental sciences and related areas are advancing knowledge that will help prepare our state and nation to adapt to extreme weather events,” said Dr. Patricia Sobecky, director of the Alabama Water Institute and associate provost for academic affairs.

“Membership in UCAR expands research collaborations and educational opportunities for our students and faculty.

UA was welcomed to UCAR after its annual meeting in October, joining with six other institutions including Duke University and Louisiana State University.

“It is an honor to welcome these great universities to UCAR,” said UCAR President Antonio Busalacchi. “The work of university researchers and educators is more important than ever as they train the next-generation workforce and collaborate with partners in government and the private sector to advance our understanding of the Earth system for the betterment of society.”
