Holiday Happenings on Campus

Holiday Happenings on Campus

The UA campus has much to offer during the month of December. This holiday season, UA’s museums again open their doors to the Tuscaloosa community for special afternoons of holiday cheer, complete with music, food, decorations, crafts and exhibits. And luminaries bring a special glow to the Quad.

Museum Open Houses

On Dec. 3, three of UA’s museums will offer seasonal decorations, refreshments, family-friendly exhibits and crafts, and free admission. Our museum open houses are a tradition at UA, and a big hit with families.

Start your open house visits at the Mildred Westervelt Warner Transportation Museum on Jack Warner Parkway. The event runs from 2-4 p.m. Continue on to the Gorgas House Museum on campus between 3-5 p.m., and finish your afternoon at the Alabama Museum of Natural History Open House from 4-5:30 p.m.

Doll Exhibit

While you are at the Gorgas House Museum, enjoy the exhibit, “A Life with Dolls: The Dolls of Susan Hodgson.” She began collecting dolls in 1949 at the age of seven while living in Austria. Since then she has grown her collection during her trips abroad and raising her family as well as gifts from friends who knew of her hobby. The dolls represent her life as a military wife and 23 household moves as she traveled with her husband during his NATO service.

Luminaries on the Quad

As you stroll between museums on Dec. 3, you can see the glow of 3,000 luminaria around the Quad. Student members of the service organization UA Circle K will be there to tell you about Jean Dean RIF, a nonprofit organization that donates books to children who otherwise might not have any. This will be UA Circle K’s 43rd annual Luminaries on the Quad.

Bryant Museum

The holiday fun continues on Dec. 15, when the Paul W. Bryant Museum offers free admission from 4-8 p.m. for an evening of music, children’s activities and a 20 percent discount on purchases in the museum shop.
