As images and stories of devastation from Hurricane Harvey continue to surface from south Texas and Louisiana, The University of Alabama has remained focused on providing the necessary resources and support to our students from the affected areas. We have identified 603 enrolled students who are from the 29 counties and five parishes covered in the presidential disaster declarations. Appropriate UA staff have reached out to these students. We have also reached out to alumni in the area.
“As we survey the footage and continue to hear of the loss in Houston and southeast Texas, we are devastated with and for our many students and alumni from the area as well as everyone else who has been affected by the storm,” said UA President Dr. Stuart Bell. “Born and raised in Texas, my wife Susan and I are particularly heartbroken at what we are seeing.”
The Office of Student Care and Wellbeing has shared the services and support structures available to students, and will continue to work with affected students on their individual needs.
“As a university, we are concerned for our students, alumni, and their families. We have many groups and individuals ready to assist and resources available,” said Bell. “If you need support, please reach out to us so we can help in this time of difficulty. The University of Alabama is a place characterized by compassion to those hurting and in need, and we will continue to offer our heartfelt support as Texas recovers in the days ahead.”
The UA Counseling Center and Office of the Dean of Students are also available to provide additional assistance to students. In the coming days and weeks, UA’s Center for Service and Leadership will lead campus initiatives to provide assistance and relief to storm victims. As a university that has experienced the devastation of natural disasters, we will continue to offer support and service to our friends and students in Texas and Louisiana.
