Diversity officer position filled

After a nationwide search that began in the fall of 2016, the University of Alabama welcomed G. Christine Taylor from Purdue University into the inaugural position of vice president and associate provost for diversity, equity and inclusion, on Aug. 1. “Our goal in creating this leadership position is to enhance the engagement, support, and well-being for everyone on campus,” President Stuart Bell said when the search was originally announced last year.

Atlanta History Center to host discussion on Confederate monuments

As national debate continues on the removal of Confederate monuments and memorials that many contend represent white supremacy, the Atlanta History Center will host a panel discussion called “Confederate Memorials: De-Mythologizing the Iconography of the South” on Sept. 11 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Margaret Mitchell House, 979 Crescent Ave., in Midtown … Speakers will include Dr. Regina N. Bradley, a writer and researcher of African American life and culture; James A. Crank, an Assistant Professor of American/Southern Literature and Culture at the University of Alabama; Dr. Maurice J. Hobson, an Assistant Professor of African American Studies at Georgia State University; and Erich Nunn, an Associate Professor of English at Auburn University, where he teaches American Studies, with an emphasis on the literature and culture of the South. Amid Charlottesville backlash, some are asking if statue removal push has gone too far

Since the violent clashes in Charlottesville earlier this month, the debate over removing Confederate monuments is sparking other controversies. In New York City, for instance, there are growing calls to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus that stands atop a plinth in the middle of the famed traffic circle that bears the name of the Italian explorer …“Removing these statues facilitates people forgetting about the bad old days,” Alfred Brophy, a professor at the University of Alabama School of Law, told Fox News. “We have this idea that it is all about morals, but you have to contextualize these issues.”

Homewood resident elected Girls State governor
The Homewood Star – Aug. 29
Homewood resident and Alabama School of Fine Arts rising creative writing senior Emma Camp recently represented ASFA at American Legion Auxiliary’s Girls State. While she was there she was elected as Governor of Girls State. She also met with current Alabama Governor Kay Ivey. Alabama Girls State is a weeklong, hands-on learning opportunity for some of the best and brightest young women in the State of Alabama. The 75th Session of ALA Alabama Girls State was held on the campus of The University of Alabama June 4-9.

UA APR professor remembers surviving Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina hit land 12 years ago and Teri Henley and her husband, Hank, evacuated New Orleans. Teri Henley says the move was one in the right direction. Henley is sharing her experiences from Hurricane Katrina with her friends in Houston as they are now under the havoc of Hurricane Harvey.

Madison County Chapter of UA Alumni Association to host tailgate kickoff

The Madison County Chapter of The University of Alabama Alumni Association is hosting a tailgate kickoff party. All Bama alumni, friends, family and fans are welcome. Live music and entertainment is going to be provided by the local band, The Woodpeckers. Complimentary food will be provided to the first 200 attendees.
