TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama has named Dr. Luoheng Han as associate provost for academic affairs. Han is a professor of geography at UA and senior associate dean of The College of Arts and Sciences.
In his new role in the Office for Academic Affairs, he will work on undergraduate program review, assessment, the core curriculum, residency and space planning. He also will work with the Council of Assistant and Associate Deans in drafting and reviewing academic policies.
“We are pleased to have someone with Luoheng’s long association with The University of Alabama and vast academic administrative experience joining our office,” said Dr. Kevin Whitaker, executive vice president and provost. “He brings a deep understanding of our current procedures to the role, and he also will bring fresh ideas to help us provide a premier undergraduate and graduate educational experience.”
Han joined UA after earning a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1994. He was promoted to associate professor and tenured in 1999, and he became a full professor in 2005. During the past 10 years, he has served as chair of the geography department as well as associate dean and senior associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences. As associate dean, he was responsible for the departments in the natural science and mathematics division; space and facilities; research, contracts and grants; graduate affairs; and international programs.
In the 1990s, he developed and taught the geographic information technology courses in the geography department, including all remote sensing and GIS courses. In addition, he was the founding director of UA’s GIS Certification program.
His research interests in using remote sensing to study water quality led to the publication of multiple research articles in top remote sensing journals. He has received more than $500,000 in funding for research. He holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Northeast Normal University-China.
