UACCS puts on gift drive

As the holiday season rolls along, groups in Tuscaloosa are working to make things a little bit easier on veterans. The University of Alabama’s College of Continuing Studies is partnering with the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama for a gift drive for the patients at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center.

Alabama newspapers give away nearly 100 years of history

A few years ago, Alabama Media Group moved its photo archives into one place. Nearly 100 years of negatives from The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times and Mobile’s Press-Register were brought to the building that housed the presses in Mobile … Alabama Media Group will continue using the archives. It’s made good use of them before, including working with a University of Alabama class to find stories hidden in the negatives. It also created an ongoing series with images and stories from the collection.

United Way campaign reaches goal, raises $3.7 million

The United Way of West Alabama exceeded its 2016 campaign goal by more than $100,000, raising $3.72 million since August. The nonprofit celebrated the achievement Thursday night with a reception at Foster Auditorium on the University of Alabama campus. “Those dollars will be put to good work in our community. I would like the thank you all for being here tonight and perhaps, more importantly, all you do to make our community a special place,” campaign chairman Robert Witt said.
