Two UA Engineering Professors Honored

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Two professors in The University of Alabama College of Engineering who teach metallurgical and materials engineering will be honored by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society, or TMS, for their contributions to education and their profession.

Dr. Ramana Reddy, ACIPCO Endowed Professor of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, was selected for the TMS 2017 Educator Award. Dr. Gregory B. Thompson, professor, will be the TMS 2017 Brimacombe Medalist.

The Educator Award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to education in metallurgical engineering or materials science and engineering.

The Brimacombe Medalist is a mid-career award for TMS members who have sustained excellence and achievement in business, technology, education, public policy or science related to materials science and engineering with a record of service to the profession.

Both will be honored at the TMS 2017 Annual Meeting and Exhibition in San Diego in March.

Reddy has more than 33 years of teaching and research experience in chemical and materials engineering, particularly in the areas of thermodynamics, materials synthesis, molten metal processing and renewable energy. While at UA, he served as the head of the UA Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering as well as associate director for the UA Center for Green Manufacturing.

Thompson, who joined UA in 2003, serves as director of the Materials Science doctoral program on campus and associate director of the University’s Central Analytical Facility. Thompson’s research emphasis is in the thermodynamics and mechanisms of phase transformations and their effect on microstructure properties.

TMS is the professional organization encompassing the entire range of materials science and engineering, from minerals processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of materials. Included among its professional and student members are metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators and administrators from more than 70 countries on six continents.
