TUSCALOOSA, Ala.  — Dr. Gary Moynihan, a professor in The University of Alabama College of Engineering, recently received the Fellow Award from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers.

This award recognizes outstanding leaders of the profession who have made significant, nationally-recognized contributions to industrial and systems engineering.

A fellow is the highest classification of IISE membership. He received the award at the IISE Annual Conference and Exposition Honors and Awards Banquet held earlier in Anaheim, California.

A senior member since 1990, he has served the Institute as student chapter faculty adviser, senior chapter president, and regional vice president.

Moynihan is a professor and lead engineer for the construction engineering and architectural engineering programs at UA.

Moynihan co-founded and serves as assistant director for the Alabama Industrial Assessment Center, funded by U.S. Department of Energy, to assist manufacturing facilities in energy cost reduction, productivity improvement, waste minimization and pollution prevention.

His primary areas of research are information systems development, industrial engineering applications and project management.

He has served as principal or co-principal investigator on research grants and contracts from NASA, the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command, the Federal Aviation Administration, BellSouth Telecommunications, Mercedes-Benz and the foundry industry. Moynihan has authored more than 120 articles in books, journals and conference proceedings, and has five software copyrights.

Prior to joining the University, Moynihan was employed for 10 years by Martin Marietta Orlando Aerospace, where he was a manufacturing engineer, industrial engineer and a systems analyst for a variety of company programs, including missile defense and fixed wing/rotorcraft avionics. He has also held production supervisor positions in the computer and chemical processing industries.

He received bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a master’s of business administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1978 and 1980, respectively, and his doctorate in industrial engineering from the University of Central Florida in 1990.

Founded in 1948, IISE is an international, non-profit association that provides leadership for the application, education, training, research and development of industrial and systems engineering.
