UA receives $5 million grant to help attract minority students to STEM fields

The University of Alabama gets a $5 million grant to help attract minority students to STEM fields. The money from the National Science Foundation will help the Alabama Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation promote STEM fields to Middle school students, and provide money to help minority high school and college students participate in research activities during the summer.

Alabama Claims Lead in Largest Number of FORTIFIED Homes

As severe weather events increase in both frequency and severity, more states are looking for ways to make their coastal communities more resilient. A new program in Alabama has builders building stronger, safer and more durable homes and businesses … Also, a new independent study of homes in Baldwin and Mobile counties by the Alabama Center for Insurance Information and Research (ACIIR) at the University of Alabama found that implementing FORTIFIED construction standards not only makes homes more resistant to wind damage, but also increases the resale value. The study found that switching from a conventional construction standard to a FORTIFIED designation increases the value of a home by nearly 7%, holding all other variables constant.

Renaissance hiring dozens at job fair

The Renaissance Montgomery is holding a job fair today to try to fill dozens of jobs at a time of booming hotel growth in the city. The four-diamond downtown hotel is looking for people to work in restaurants, bars, housekeeping, with the events staff and at the front desk. There are also some management positions open … The leisure and hospitality industry added the second-most jobs of any other industry in Alabama from May 2014 to May 2015, according to the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama.
