UA AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH – The UA Black History Kickoff Celebration will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, on the seventh floor community room at Presidential Village. First-week events include a screening of “Percy Julian: The Forgotten Genius” at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, in Shelby Hall 1092; and “My Lens, Our Ferguson: Artist talk with Adrian O. Walker” and “African American History in Print,” 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in the Ferguson Center Art Gallery. In addition, the program “Freedom Riders, in Their Own Words” will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, at First African Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa. In addition, a tour titled “Slavery and the University” by Dr. Hilary Green, assistant professor of gender and race studies, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, starting on the Gorgas Library steps. UA HOSTS LULLABY CONCERT – UA’s Child Development Resources hosts a Lullaby Concert from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4. The free community event is designed for parents and children, birth to 5, to enjoy music and reading together. Entertainment will include storytellers, a musical petting zoo, various musicians and more. Families will also receive a free children’s book. MUSEUM KICKS OFF CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS– UA’s Alabama Museum of Natural History soon kicks off its Museum Monday and Growing Up Wild Preschool. Museum Mondays, offered to kindergarten through second-graders, runs from 3:30 to 5 p.m. the first Monday of the month. Cost is $8 per session. Growing Up Wild Preschool runs from 10 a.m. to noon the first Friday of the month for preschoolers and their caregivers. The cost is $2. For registration, which is required, phone 205/348-7550. MINI MEDICAL SCHOOL CONTINUES WITH WEEKLY LECTURE SERIES – Dr. Jane Weida, a family medicine physician and associate director of the College of Community Health Sciences Family Medicine Residency, will present “Helping Haiti Heal” at noon Feb. 4 as part of a lecture series for UA’s OLLI program. The presentation will teach participants about what family physicians and other volunteers are doing in Haiti to improve health care and improve the lives of its children following the earthquake of January 2010. IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE DURING ANNUAL FAMILY NIGHT – Children and their families can explore the academic world at UA during the fifth annual Hands-On Family Night at Smith Hall from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6. With a safari theme, this year’s event features exhibits by graduate students in different departments, as well as food and door prizes donated by various local businesses.
