UA Offers Physics Contest for Students in High School

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s department of physics and astronomy will host its 40th annual physics contest for students in high school on Friday, Jan. 29, in the Ferguson Center on campus.  The contest typically draws hundreds of students from several states to compete for scholarships, awards and bragging rights.

The event will include individual and team competitions as well as demonstrations of physics in action, a program for teachers, an open house in Gallalee Hall and informal opportunities to obeserve campus life at The University of Alabama.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom lobby with the written exam starting at 9 a.m. in the ballroom itself. The physics show will be at 2:15 p.m., followed by the 3 p.m. awards ceremony, each in the Ferguson Center theatre.

Weather permitting, student competitors on campus Thursday, Jan. 28, may attend a viewing of the moon, planets and other deep sky objects session with UA’s 16-inch Ritchey-Chretien reflector telescope in the rooftop observatory at Gallalee Hall, near University Boulevard and Hackberry Lane.

The department of physics and astronomy is part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes , Goldwater and Truman scholarships.
