Nick’s Kids Foundation honors teachers for excellence in classroom
Tuscaloosa News – Dec. 11
Twenty-two elementary and middle school teachers who work in the Tuscaloosa City Schools and at private schools were honored Friday at the fourth annual Nick’s Kids Foundation Teacher Excellence Awards luncheon at the Tuscaloosa River Market. Each teacher was nominated for the award by their school principals who had the task of selecting a single teacher who goes above and beyond the required job responsibilities inside and outside of the classroom. Every honoree received $500 in gift cards, a plaque, a free meal and a photo with Nick’s Kids co-founder Terry Saban, who was a teacher herself for 12 years. “One of my favorite awards at our football banquet is our ‘Unsung Hero’ award,” Saban said, as she welcomed the honorees. “It goes to our football players who work so hard and have a very important role on the team, but they’re never acknowledged and they never receive an award or recognition.

Sexual disclosure laws require reconsideration for teens with HIV
Healio – Dec. 14

LETTER: Thanks to police depts. for stepped-up patrols
Tuscaloosa News – Dec. 14
I would like to commend the University of Alabama Police and Tuscaloosa Police for their increased presence with patrols through the neighborhoods near campus (i.e. the historic district) while most of the students have gone home for the semester break. I have even seen officers patrolling on foot in the past. Surely this has discouraged potential break-ins at vacant houses and apartments. Unfortunately, these residences have been targeted at an increasing rate.
