When she moved back home from Pennsylvania recently, Nidesha Kinney was surprised by how little Decatur Mall had changed from the place she remembered hanging out in as a teenager. “Many of the stores are the same, and it looks like every other mall,” Kinney said while shopping with her mother, Hattie Kinney, at the mall. But mall management said Decatur Mall is changing as is it fights to overcome the trend of struggling malls across America and its own history … Changing the mall’s future requires creativity in trying to draw customers into these indoor shopping centers, University of Alabama marketing professor Kristy Reynolds said. “If a mall like Decatur is going to survive, it has to add more nontraditional tenants and reinvent itself,” Reynolds said.
Ways to help elderly parents maintain psychological prowess

As your parents age, their risk of loss of independence and physical health problems increases while their potential quality of life decreases, all as a result of decreased psychological prowess. Some changes in psychological prowess can be noticed as early as age 60. The University of Alabama’s Dr. Justin White offers tips on how you can encourage your aging parent and help them remain cognitively sharp. Cognitive stimulation: Engaging in chess, bridge, crossword puzzles, Sudoku puzzles and other mentally challenging activities can improve cognition; Routine physical activity: Brisk walks, water aerobics, yoga and other low-impact activities are all good options for increasing brain oxygen levels and enhancing cognitive abilities.
Comic book exhibit on display in W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library

The comic book exhibit, “Saving the Universe one Panel as a Time: Heroes & Superheroes of the Bronze Age of Comic Books and Beyond” will be on display through the end of the semester in the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library, located in Mary Harmon Bryant Hall. The exhibit is opened from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the week. The exhibit will focus mostly on the Bronze and Modern Age of comic books, which took place from the 1970’s to the present, said Kate Matheny, division of special collections. According to the UA libraries website, the exhibit will feature books from Harold Selesky Comics Collection and the Sneed Comic Book Collection in the following sections: Iconic Stories, 1970s-1980s; Superman Reimagined; How Well Do You Know Your Marvel Teams?; Public Domain Heroes; History Mashup; and The Many Faces of Jekyll & Hyde.
Signature Academies in Mobile County Giving Real Life Experiences

Murphy High School even looks like a college. Academy students use this lecture hall – the only one like it in the state – to take virtual classes with University of Alabama professors. It’s all possible thanks to big screens and webcams.
Heart Touch Program held at Holt Elementary School

Students over at Holt Elementary brushed up on the ancient art of Kung Fu today. Heart Touch, a program started by UA Chinese Ph.D. student Fan Yang, is a cultural enrichment program for elementary and college students. Every week students learn about festivals, food, music and art from other countries. Yang started the program after finding it difficult for international students to connect with the community.
Museum Monday at Alabama Museum of Natural History

The first of every month is Museum Monday at the Alabama Museum of Natural History. Children in kindergarten through second grade get a chance to learn about science and the world. Today, students got to learn about migration.
UA to host off-campus housing fair

The Ferguson Center will be holding an off-campus housing fair Nov. 4 starting at 10 a.m. The fair will include over 25 different off campus options, and students will be able to ask different questions and get information about what each location offers. Julie Elmore, assistant director for Off-Campus Housing said now is the time to be looking for housing options. “We suggest that students look now then go home at Thanksgiving and discuss what their options are with their parents or another adult that may be helping them with their living expenses,” Elmore said. Properties will also include all those shown during the Off Campus Bus Tour held back Oct. 18 and 25. Elmore said she suggests that students come with some questions in mind before attending the fair.
UA Alabama Capital Access Matchmaker

The Alabama Small Business Development Center Network, a department within The University of Alabama, is providing the inaugural financing conference in Orange Beach on Nov. 5. The Alabama Capital Access Matchmaker for Small Business will provide educational programs for Businesses and lenders beginning at 8 a.m., lunch will be “own your own” at Cobalt of Orange Beach, followed by matchmaker style networking, connecting businesses and interested individuals to the program representatives in a “speed dating” atmosphere. This no cost event is being provided so that all can attend.
University Programs holds “I Voted Too” Forum

Students are trying to get other students involved in the upcoming presidential election. University Programs held a forum at the Ferguson Center called, “I Voted, Too.” The forum focused on educating students on the upcoming election and giving background on each candidate.
UA students to help “Strike” out hunger

This Wednesday, UA students will partner up with Secret Meals for Hungry Children, a program through the Alabama Credit Union that was created to decrease the number of children facing hunger in Alabama. The event will take place at Bama Lanes at 5:30 p.m.
