UA Honors College Students Perform Service Projects in Marion

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — About 125 students and 25 student leaders from The University of Alabama Honors College will perform service projects  from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 in Marion as part of the 57 Miles Project.

The project sites include the downtown square area, Francis Marion High School and the Chamber of Commerce.

These projects involve painting and gardening as well as general maintenance. Once each group finishes their work, the student leaders will moderate small-group discussions about the day’s events.

UA’s 57 Miles will work with Marion Military Institute, UA Honors Year One, Francis Marion High School, UA Housing and Residential Communities and the Marion Gardening Club. These groups have all pledged volunteers for this afternoon of service.

Founded in summer 2013, 57 Miles is a campus-community partnership between UA’s Honors College and Perry County. Through 57 Miles, the distance between UA and the Perry County community, Honors students have year-round opportunities to give back to communities in need, learn about the Black Belt’s vibrant history and put education into action by tackling challenges of rural poverty.
