BEST BETS

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL CAMP – UA’s Adapted Athletics program will host a four-day wheelchair basketball camp for children, beginning Thursday with a skills assessment and competition. Campers will have skills training during morning and afternoon sessions and competitions each evening. Campers will receive instruction from UA coaches and players, including some from the 2015 women’s national championship team. For more information, contact David Miller, UA Media Relations, at 205/348-0825 or dcmiller2@ur.ua.edu.

THERE’S A LOT OF BUZZ RIGHT NOW ABOUT BEES – If you buy a tomato this summer, chances are it was pollinated by a bumble bee. These plump insects, along with other bees, play a vital role in agriculture. But, it hasn’t been a great few years to be a bee. Some species are in decline. Dr. Jeff Lozier, a UA biologist, leads a new $1 million National Science Foundation research project to better understand how two specific bumble bee species cope with changes in their environment. Read more about the work here. To schedule an interview this week, contact Lozier directly at jlozier@ua.edu or 205/348-2754. For assistance, contact Chris Bryant in media relations, 205/348-8323 or cbryant@ur.ua.edu.

GRANT HELPS PREPARE NURSE EDUCATORS – UA’s Capstone College of Nursing has a new funding program that will make doctoral nursing education more affordable for practicing or teaching nurses who are committed to educating the next generation of nurses. The nearly $264,000 grant allows the College to offer loans for reasonable educational expenses at a low interest rate with subsequent partial loan forgiveness to borrowers who complete the program of study and then serve as a full-time nursing faculty for a period of four years. UA EXPERT TIPS

UA MATTERS: SUGGESTIONS FOR THE LACTOSE INTOLERANT – Living with lactose intolerance doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite dairy foods. Lactose intolerance is a very individual condition and the amount of dairy products that an individual can tolerate will vary from person to person. UA’s Sheena Quizon Gregg, a registered dietitian, offers a few tips from the National Dairy Council for reintroducing dairy products into your diet in this week’s UA Matters. UA MATTERS: KEEP FUTURE EMPLOYERS IN MIND WHILE USING SOCIAL MEDIA – Social media has turned many of us into experts on online impression management: we understand intuitively how to modify our appearances and messages in order to appear more attractive, get more attention, more “likes,” more followers. If you’re looking for a job (or considering looking for one in the future), you need to use these impression management skills while taking the perspectives of potential employers. UA’s Dr. Elliot Panek, assistant professor of telecommunications and film in the College of Communication and Information Sciences, offers some suggestions.
