Community leaders came together today at The University of Alabama to discuss the economy. The West Alabama Chamber of Commerce hosted the State of the Economy event. Vice President for Research and Economic Development at UA says the partnership between business and education is crucial for the region’s recent successes. This past year unemployment in Tuscaloosa dropped from 7.5% to 6.5%.

Alabama Center for Real Estate Sets Partnership Goals

Entrepreneurs and researchers with potentially marketable discoveries and ideas could soon get some help bringing their ideas to market. A new partnership involving a private investment firm and the University of Alabama will be formally unveiled soon, said Carl Pinkert, UA vice president for research and economic development. Pinkert, the keynote speaker at the first local State of Economy conference on, said the partnership’s goal will be to develop companies from the ideas and research coming from UA’s researchers, faculty and students.

New Katrina Doc Focuses on Coast Guard Response

A new Hurricane Katrina documentary focuses on the heroism show by members of the U.S. Coast Guard in the days following the disaster. In a rare show of emotion, Guardsmen describe never being trained to do the type rescues that were necessary in the New Orleans area. According to the producers of Paratus 14:50, “…the Coast Guard contribute to pulling more than 33,500 people from the impacted areas; the greatest single rescue in our nation’s history. The documentary is being produced by a team of students and recent graduates from the University of Alabama. The team is being led by Kaitlin Smith, a New Orleans native and the daughter of an active-duty Coast Guardsman.”

Having fun while learning about engineering. Hundreds of high school students headed to The University of Alabama this week. The Student Introduction to Engineering Camp has been an annual event for more than 25 years. Catapulting and sling-shooting golf balls was part of this week’s challenge. Different groups attend each week for three weeks.
