American Legion Alabama Boys State Honors UA President with Thompson Award

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The American Legion Alabama Boys State convention has awarded University of Alabama President Judy Bonner with its highest honor, the James V. Thompson Award, named after the first young man elected Alabama Boys State governor.

This is the first time the Thompson Award has been awarded to a woman. Boys State is meeting through Friday, June 5, on the UA campus.

“Dr. Bonner’s leadership, citizenship and service is in keeping with the highest traditions of The American Legion Alabama Boys State, Girls State and The University of Alabama,” the award states. “Dr. Judy Bonner exemplifies leadership and citizenship every day of her life.”

Bonner received the award June 1.

Alabama Boys State is a leadership and government training program. It is among the highest honors granted to high school senior boys.

Students from around the state are chosen based on their demonstration of leadership, hard work, strong morals and motivation in school and community activities.

Delegates have the opportunity to join groups that focus on their individual areas of interest, including law and law enforcement, aerospace, local government and the environment.

The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State will meet at UA from Sunday, June 7, to Friday, June 12.
