UA hosts Service Member to Civilian Summit

The University of Alabama hosted a summit to improve the transition to civilian life for military veterans. The two-day event is called the Service Member to Civilian Summit. It is a conference on improving transition from life in the military to civilian life.

‘Some good men’: Alabama airmen killed at Bay of Pigs to be honored today at Forest Hills Cemetery

Four Alabama airmen killed during the ill-fated Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba will be honored by the Alabama Air National Guard in a ceremony at Forest Hills Cemetery today at 3:30 p.m., according to a news release from the Guard’s 117th Air Refueling Wing. The ceremony will honor Leo Baker, Wade Gray, Riley Shamburger and T.W. “Pete” Ray, who were killed April 19, 1961, on the third day of the failed attempt — backed by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) — to overthrow Cuban leader Fidel Castro. The Wing will lay a wreath at Ray’s grave at the cemetery, offer a 21-gun salute and play “Taps,” according to the news release.  … The University of Alabama Honors College produced a film about the invasion, titled “La Batalla de Playa Girón: The Alabama Air National Guard’s Role in the Bay of Pigs Invasion.”
