Monday Morning Manager: Robert McKinney, Doctoral Student & Social Worker, University of Alabama
SocialWorkManager.com – Jan. 8
I was the assistant director of a large, non-profit social-service organization for three years. I left that position to pursue the Ph.D. in Social Work. While in school, I was the interim director of a secure, residential, educational and treatment facility, a position that I held for approximately 6 months. I currently provide some of the supervision of field students at The University of Alabama University Medical Center where I am also a clinical social worker and case manager. I also see clinical patients privately and am a yoga instructor … Tell us about your path to management: I was elected student representative to the MSW program committee by my peers both years of my MSW program. This afforded me the opportunity to interact with faculty members on a different level than the typical student-teacher relationship. Three months after I graduated, one of those committee members suggested that I apply for the job of assistant director of a large, non-profit, social service agency on whose board of directors she served.

Saints’ Vinnie Sunseri looking to continue education both on and off the field
Baton Rouge Advocate (La.) – Jan. 8
It was a year of education for Vinnie Sunseri. A fifth-round pick out of Alabama, the safety learned what it’s like to play in the NFL, what it means to be a professional, and how to deal with a season-ending injury at this level. His education will continue as he goes through his first offseason as a pro. It will also continue in a more traditional sense as Sunseri will spend his offseason at the University of Alabama working to finish his degree in business management — a promise he made to his parents, Roxann and Sal, before turning pro last year. “My dad always told me that football was really important to me, but education was really important to my parents,” Sunseri said. “I promised them that if I left school early, I would go back and finish my degree. I don’t want to put it off, I don’t want to wait until the most convenient time. I’m going to do it right away and prove to them that it was important to me.” The New Orleans Saints safety is only two classes shy of receiving his diploma and will take one class related to his major and an elective, likely related to public speaking. Sunseri plans to pursue a career in public speaking or broadcasting once his career comes to a close.

Michigan’s past comes to life on Twitter feed
Detroit Free Press – Jan. 8
On a recent morning, the photos posted on the Twitter feed Michigan’s Past included a moody, rainy take on Lansing’s Allegan Street, circa 1948; and a postcard from the early 1900s featuring gigantic winter squash. Mason Christensen, its creator, has shared 14,000-plus posts with the Twitterverse over the past year. … Not all of those photo sources are based in Michigan. For example, he has found a trove of Marquette-area mining pictures in an online archive created by the Colorado School of Mines and Michigan resort photos and letters to Detroit Tiger Ty Cobb in a digital archive at the University of Alabama.

UA students brave cold temperatures to get to class
CBS 42 (Birmingham) – Jan. 8
University of Alabama students are braving the cold on their second day back from Christmas Break. Our cameras even caught up with some students who were wearing T-shirts as they walked to class. But to give you an idea of how cold it was on campus, some sprinklers malfunctioned outside one of the buildings and this was the result. “It was a bit of a change, a little bit of a change and I can’t feel my hands most times, but it’s alright.” Students tell us, if they feel like they’re getting too cold walking, they can just hop on the Crimson Ride bus to get to class.
