Alabama AD Bill Battle on the challenges, lessons and pride of running the Crimson Tide
Birmingham Business Journal – Dec. 3
As the leader of the University of Alabama athletics program, Bill Battle oversees a department that is raking in more than $150 million in annual revenue and nearly $10 million in licensing revenue. Battle, who established the Collegiate Licensing Co. in Birmingham and helped revolutionize the world of athletic licensing, knows all about that. The BBJ caught up with Battle to hear about the biggest challenge of his job, the lessons he’s learned along the way, and the proudest moment of his career. Here are a few excerpts from our interview. You can see the rest in our full Executive Profile. What’s the biggest challenge of your job? There are so many moving parts to the department. Our business is event management, and we participate in almost 400 events every year, and we host half of those, so we’ve got to provide for not only getting the teams ready to play but providing for the fans to come, the safety and security and traffic flow.

New Spike Lee thriller starring Alabama native Stephen Tyrone Williams has a trailer; watch it now
Al.com – Dec. 3
The new Spike Lee film backed by Kickstarter last summer finally has a trailer, so we get a look at Alabama’s own Stephen Tyrone Williams in his first starring role on film now with its first trailer. “Da Sweet Blood of Jesus” surpassed its Kickstarter goal of $1.25 million with several days to go before its deadline last August, thanks for more than 6,000 backers, and here we are with the finished product. Billed as a comedy, romance and thriller, all we really know is that it’s about people who are addicted to blood. Lee emphasized back during the Kickstarter campaign that the characters are not vampires, but things get pretty bloody. The film played at a handful of film festivals, so you can search to get more details on the plot, but we’ll steer clear for now. A new Spike Lee film is usually enough for film fans to get excited, but for Alabama film fans specifically, seeing the Tuscaloosa native Williams in his feature film debut is a huge thrill. Williams graduated from Central High School in Tuscaloosa in 2000 and then University of Alabama in 2004.

The University of Alabama once again takes the top spot on our List with 34,852 students, followed by Auburn University. Top of the List – The top five colleges and universities by fall 2013 enrollment are: 1. University of Alabama- 34,852; 2. Auburn University- 24,864; 3. University of Alabama at Birmingham- 18,591.
