Fall semester underway at UA
NBC 12 (Montgomery) – Aug. 21
The fall semester has started at The University of Alabama, and these days, that means more students in Tuscaloosa. Although there are no numbers available yet for this semester’s enrollment, Fall 2013 enrollment reached an all-time high of 34,852 students. In the Fall of 2004, that number was 20,969. The most recent enrollment numbers include 29,443 undergraduates and 5,409 graduate and professional students. Of the undergraduates, 53.6 percent were from Alabama, 42.8 percent were out-of-state and 3.6 percent were from foreign countries. Below is a breakdown, provided by UA, of top ten states where undergraduates came from in Fall 2013: 1. Alabama 18,554; 2. Georgia 2,372; 3. Florida 1,569 … UA says students from all 50 states were represented on campus in 2013. The University also says it still has more in-state students than any other college or university in the state.
Public radio fundraiser Saturday at Druid City Brewing Company tap room
Tuscaloosa News – Aug. 21
The overlap between followers of public radio and local craft beer lovers might not be wide, but correcting that is one reason for Saturday’s “Putting the Pub in Public Radio” fund-raiser. “We’ve got members who’ve probably never been (to the Druid City Brewing Co.), and Bo (Hicks, co-owner of the Druid City Brewing Co.) has a following that probably doesn’t listen to us,” said Jennifer Goode Davis, membership manager for Alabama Public Radio, housed on the University of Alabama campus. Saturday’s event, 4-7 p.m. at the Druid City Brewing Co. tap room, 607 14th St. in Tuscaloosa, will feature food catered by Billy’s Sports Grill and music from local rock band the Golden Monica. Alabama Public Radio will receive $1 from each pint sold, as well as proceeds from ticket sales. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 on Saturday, and will include an event T-shirt and a pint glass. Thickets are available at www.apr.org/pub, or Manna Grocery, 2300 McFarland Blvd. E No. 12, Hudson Poole Fine Jewelers, 1111 Greensboro Ave., and The Guitar Gallery, 309 Hargrove Road E.
LOCAL Q&A: Jordan Welch: UA nursing student, not a Bulldog
Tuscaloosa News – Aug. 21
Jordan Welch shocked her Mississippi State University- loving family by choosing Tuscaloosa for college. Q: What do you do? A: I am currently a full-time student at the University of Alabama studying nursing. I have always wanted to be a nurse because I love learning about the human body and I have a passion for people. I am very proud to call Tuscaloosa my new home, and have become a member of the Honors College, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and Phi Eta Sigma National Freshman Honor Society at (UA). I have also gotten involved at the college ministry group known as The Well, and the Boys and Girls Club. I have loved every minute I have spent in Tuscaloosa, and I am looking forward to the experiences to come.
