UA Matters: College Prep Tips for High-School Juniors

Whether you’re an incoming high-school freshman or senior, there are a multitude of things you can do to prepare for college. The University of Alabama’s admissions office offers a few suggestions on how students can better plan for their college futures.

This is the third of four posts that provides students in each grade level a checklist for college preparation.

Juniors:

  • Register for an ACT/SAT class through your high school or a local college.
  • Take the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test) in the fall. Large National Merit Corporation scholarship packages are awarded based on the results of this test. For more information, visit collegeboard.com.
  • Discuss your senior-year class schedule with your counselor to ensure you complete all courses required for admission by your top colleges.
  • Attend college fairs in your area, and review the colleges on your list.
  • Take the ACT and/or SAT.
  • Attendance, grades and leadership still count.
  • Keep updating your resume.
  • Decide whom you would like to write your senior-year recommendations.
  • Search job possibilities that fit your interests.
  • Continue to take advantage of summer academic programs and jobs.
  • Schedule visits to your top five college picks.
