Business Confidence Stable, Stronger Job Growth Expected in Third Quarter 2014

The Alabama Business Confidence Index™ (ABCI) held steady on the third quarter 2014 survey, down just 0.1 points to 55.5. Sentiment improved from a year ago when the index stood at 52.9. While trends in the six components of the ABCI were mixed, all indexes show positive outlooks. This is the 51st consecutive quarter that the Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) in The University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Commerce has surveyed business confidence in the state. A total of 248 business executives from across Alabama participated in the current survey. A much better hiring outlook is the important story of the third quarter survey. The hiring index is up 3.8 points to 54.9, its highest reading since it registered 57.6 eight years ago in 2006. Among this quarter’s panelists, 32.3 percent expect job growth in their industry to pick up this quarter, while 54.4 percent anticipate hiring at the same pace as in the second quarter. Only 13.3 percent forecast a reduction in hiring.
Rotary Club, University of Alabama to team up for blood drive Thursday

The Tuscaloosa Morning Rotary Club will host a blood drive from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the University of Alabama. The blood drive benefiting the American Red Cross will be at the Tom Bevill Energy, Mineral and Material Science Research Building on UA’s campus . The drive will be in Room 1013. Donors are asked to bring a photo identification or American Red Cross donor card. In conjunction with the drive, donors will get an opportunity to observe red blood cells and a hypodermic needle through the facility’s electron microscope.
Free legal clinic for low-income residents scheduled for Thursday

A free legal clinic for low-income people will be held Thursday from 3-5:30 p.m. at the Tuscaloosa County Public Library, 1801 Jack Warner Parkway. The clinic is a joint effort of the Alabama State Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program, the Tuscaloosa County Bar Association, the University of Alabama School of Law and Legal Services Alabama. The clinic is designed to assist the more than 40,000 low-income individuals with civil law challenges. Lawyers will be available to answer questions about divorce, custody and visitation issues, landlord-tenant issues, wills and estates, debts, bankruptcy, foreclosure and domestic violence.

Dalton State’s athletic department has two interns this summer helping with marketing preparation for the coming athletic season. … Caroline Norman is a rising sophomore at the University of Alabama, where she is majoring in public relations. She is on the dean’s list and won the freshman award from the University of Alabama’s College of Environmental Sciences. Norman is a member of Phi Mu sorority and was a member of “Al’s Pals,” a mentoring program for elementary students in the city of Tuscaloosa. The Dalton High School graduate is also acquiring new skills for her major. “I hope to go into sports public relations,” she said. “This opportunity has helped me mature in my organizational skills, graphic design skills, writing skills, and helped me become more independent in my field work. This has been an amazing opportunity and will be undoubtedly beneficial to my future.”

Small world: Of all the people to run into the other night — a gaggle of Montclarions showed up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of San Francisco’s Chancellor Hotel. It turns out this iconic Union Square boutique property had hired an intern with Montclair roots — a marketing major named Kiley Pearl from the University of Alabama. Kiley planned the big birthday party and brought in family friend David Sarber to take photos.
AWSA Water Ski Championship being held in Tuscaloosa

Duncanville is filled with all kinds of action with the American Water Ski Association Southern Regional Championships happening this week. More than 250 skiers from across the United States are competing in the five-day skiing tournament at Lyman-Land. Women, men and juniors are showing off their skills in competitions like slalom skiing and jumps and tricks, all in hopes to move closer to nationals later this year. Executive vice president of the AWSA southern region, Bob Archambeau, tells us why Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports Commission is happy to host this event year after year. “It brings a lot to the area, not only is it exciting but it also helps develop different teams, the University of Alabama has one of the strongest collegiate teams that it’s just remarkable. Events run through July 27 and begin at 8 each morning. Each event is free and open to the public.
