Gift planning can be nerve-wracking at any time. But trying to find the perfect gift for a high school senior can be especially troublesome, knowing that you want it to have the cool factor, as well as a heavy dose of purpose — if it’s going to make the cut for what gets packed for college.
The University of Alabama’s Janine Gascoigne offers some gift ideas that might be perfect for any graduate.
— Cooking tools designed for microwave use, i.e. a microwave omelet maker — Many college housing options are equipped with a microwave but not a full stove or oven.
— A DIY laundry kit — This is something students will definitely need. Your kit could include a hamper, detergent and plenty of quarters. You might even throw in some laundry instructions for tough stains.
— Bedroom décor — Posters of the college or pictures from home will always be a safe gift. Students need to feel connected to their friends and family from home to push through the first-semester adjustment period.
— Noise-cancelling headphones — These could come in handy for studying in public areas, or with an active roommate.
— A gift card to the University bookstore — As much planning as families do before they move to college, something will be forgotten. A gift card to the campus bookstore can help offset those last-minute purchases once on campus.
— A board game or two to play with roommates and neighbors — This could be a great way to meet the other new students on the hall.
For those gifters that are more sentimental or creative, anything that makes your graduate feel loved and supported while adjusting to college is a sure win. A set of notes to your student with specific purposes could go a long way to smoothing the transition (think: “Open this when you’re about to take your first big test”). A fun collection of little essentials, like flip flops, highlighters and post-it notes will always be useful.
