Alabama Public Radio wins five regional Edward R. Murrow Awards

Alabama Public Radio took home five regional Edward R. Murrow Awards this week, including Overall Excellence in the Small Market Radio category. Four of APR’s awards come from their year-long coverage of the 50th anniversary of many civil rights key in Alabama’s history, including the “Stand in the Schoolhouse Door” and the 16th Street bombing.  APR and other Region 9 winners will now be considered for the national Murrow awards, to be announced in July 2014. The Murrow Awards recognize the best electronic journalism produced by radio, television and online news organizations around the world. RTDNA has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. A complete list of the 2014 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards winners can be found at rtdna.org. Alabama Public Radio, which is housed in the University of Alabama, airs statewide.

UA College of Communication & Information Sciences says goodbye to staff members who are retiring

Some UA College of Communication employees are bidding farewell this year, and many of their present and former colleagues are congratulating them on a combined 110 years of service … Jim Oakley, Mary Ann Bradley, Cecilia Hammond, and Jackie Owens all spent more than two decades at the University of Alabama ‘s communication college, and many say the students are their lasting memories as they bid farewell. Interim Dean Jennifer Greer: “It’s one of those days that’s bittersweet, because we’re so happy for them, but we don’t know what we are going to do without them.”
