ANNOUNCEMENTS

Seventh Avenue in front of the Ferguson Center will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 6 a.m. to noon. Visit http://roadclosures.ua.edu on a regular basis to stay abreast of campus infrastructure closures.

The Student Government Association invites UA students to participate in Higher Education Day, which will be held Feb. 27 in Montgomery, Ala. Higher Education Day brings all of Alabama’s public universities together to rally for increased funding and focus on higher education in the state. Among the incentives for attending, each participant will receive free transportation by bus to the event as well as free breakfast, lunch and a T-shirt. Higher Education Day is a Service Learning Pro event. Panhellenic points will also be offered. Signed excuses by the UA provost and the SGA president will be provided to all students who miss class to attend the event. Attendees will receive a souvenir bag that includes an invitation to Capital at the Capstone on March 16. Capital at the Capstone will feature a free formal dinner and a town-hall type discussion with Gov. Research paper due soon and you haven’t started? UA librarians are available Mondays-Fridays, 4-6:30 p.m., through April 24 at the first-floor information desk in Gorgas Library to help you develop your topic, find resources and cite sources. For information about additional library services, visit http://www.lib.ua.edu.

Two spaces designated for people who are returning materials to Gorgas Library are now located in the parking area behind Smith Hall. They are located next to the bike rack and have a 30-minute time limit. These two spaces replace the spaces that had been available in the south Ferguson parking lot.

The Capstone Inspiring Educator Award recognizes high school teachers who have inspired UA students to achieve their academic and career goals through outstanding teaching, mentoring and support. Each UA graduating senior (candidate for undergraduate degree) is invited to nominate a teacher from his or her high school by visiting http://www.inspiringteacher.ua.edu. Nominations will be evaluated by a UA committee representing faculty, staff, students and high school teachers, with final selection by the Office for Academic Affairs. Winners will be recognized during UA Spring Commencement activities on May 3. The deadline to submit a nomination is March 5. APPLICATIONS

The UA Away scholarship application for May Interim, summer and fall trips is available online through March 1. The scholarship allows students to work away, serve away or study away, either domestically or internationally, and is awarded based on need. Applications for membership in University Stewards are due to 203 Student Services Center by 4:45 p.m. on Feb. 28. Stewards assist Undergraduate Admissions with student lunch and dorm tours and meet with prospective students and their families to act as a support system and liaison to the University. Students considering membership must attend one of two meetings in 203 Student Services Center on Feb. 24 at either 8 p.m. or 8:30 p.m.

CAREER PREPARATION

Looking for an internship or a full-time job? Attend the following two career fairs in the Sellers Auditorium at the Bryant Conference Center. Attendees should bring their Action Cards and several copies of their résumés. Dress is business professional. No one will be allowed in either fair wearing flip-flops, jeans, shorts, T-shirts, or party or cocktail dresses.  PHILANTHROPIC OPPORTUNITIES

Phi Sigma Pi honor fraternity will host a canned-food drive for the West Alabama Food Bank through Feb. 21. Sororities will receive 1 Panhellenic point for every five cans donated. UA students can register to be a part of UADM’s dance marathon that will be held March 1 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center. UADM is a student-run philanthropy at The University of Alabama that supports Children’s of Alabama through the Children’s Miracle Network. The yearlong fundraising effort involves UA students and culminates in the dance marathon, a no-sitting event. For more information and to get involved, visit http://www.uadm.ua.edu.

EVENTS

The University of Alabama Crossroads Community Center invites the UA campus and community to participate in events throughout February during African-American History Month. This year’s campus celebration promotes recognition of the contributions of African-American culture to area communities and the nation. Activities will highlight moments in African-American history and the ongoing impact of the African-American experience. Click here for a list of events.

All students are invited to hear pre-eminent UA science faculty present a series of lightning talks on high-interest topics in science that shape our understanding of the world. The 10-minute talks will be held on the first floor of the Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering outside the Nightingale Room every Thursday at 2 p.m. during the month of February. Remaining speakers, topics and dates are Dr. Harold Stowell, professor of geological sciences, “Making of Continents: Lessons from the Cascade Mountains and Fiordland, New Zealand,” Feb. 20; and Dr. William Keel, professor of astronomy, “Out There and Beyond: The Search for Earth-Like Planets,” Feb. 27.

Blend invites all students to lunch every Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Ferguson Center dining area between Subway and the main lobby. The Black Student Union at The University of Alabama has rescheduled the State of the Black Union address. All students are invited to the event, which will now be held Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the ten Hoor Hall auditorium. The address will highlight issues facing the African-American community at the Capstone. Dr. Utz McKnight, chair of the department of gender and race studies, will be the keynote speaker. University Programs will take a group of UA students to see Chris Tucker at the Comedy Club Stardome in Hoover, Ala., on Saturday, Feb. 22. Students will meet at 4:30 p.m. at the Ferguson Plaza for departure. Each student attending will receive transportation, lunch and a ticket. Click here to register.

University Programs will host a GRE Boot Camp for UA students on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m., in 120 Farrah Hall. UP will provide students with a crash course in GRE preparation. Participants will learn study techniques and receive tips on how to perform well on the GRE. Click here to register.
