ANNOUNCEMENTS
UA’s Office of Information Technology warns students to be aware of a recent phishing email with the subject line “New Year Upgrading.” This is an attempt to steal usernames and passwords and possibly infect a user’s system with malicious code. Students who received the email should delete it. The link in the phishing email directs users to helpdeskassistancemail[dot]96[dot]lt and not to a ua.edu website. The University of Alabama does not mail this type of notification. More information: OIT Service Desk at 348-5555.
The Office of Information Technology has scheduled a network service outage for Sunday, Jan. 26, from 7 a.m. to noon. The outage will affect most network services for both the general campus network and RESNET, including Internet services. A skeleton http://www.ua.edu Web page will be in service during the outage. The service is part of OIT’s efforts to modernize the data center.
Students, faculty and staff should remember when walking, driving or biking across campus: Stay on Your Side. The safety campaign, which began this past fall, is geared to reminding the campus community to use crosswalks, sidewalks and streets appropriately. Doing so keeps traffic flowing and ensures travelers get to their destination safely.
The University of Alabama Writing Center walk-in hours in Gorgas Library will continue Mondays-Thursdays, 7 p.m.-9 p.m., through April 25. Writing Center staff will be available on the first floor near the elevators to assist students in developing writing skills necessary for academic success. The service is free. The Writing Center main facility in 322 Lloyd Hall is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Mondays-Thursdays, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Fridays.
The Capstone Heroes award recognizes UA students, faculty, staff, student organizations and members of the community whose contributions to life at the Capstone reflect the values within the Capstone Creed. The UA Academic Advisors Association is accepting nominations for the Outstanding Commitment to Advising Award. The award recognizes the importance of academic advising and is given to an outstanding faculty advisor or professional advisor who has made significant contributions in the field of academic advising at UA. Nominations are due online by 5 p.m. on Feb. 12. Click here for the nomination form.
UA students may submit nominations for the Buford Peace Award. The Peace Award is granted annually to a UA faculty member whose teaching, research, practice and professional life have demonstrated exceptional levels of involvement in mediating human disputes, helping overcome prejudice, promoting justice and establishing peace. The recipient will receive a $1,000 award and will be recognized at a ceremony in the spring. Highest priority will be given to faculty members from the School of Social Work, but faculty members in any division are eligible provided they meet the selection criteria. Microsoft DreamSpark is now available. DreamSpark is a subscription program from Microsoft to provide professional developer and design tools for teaching and research. DreamSpark Standard covers all faculty, students and labs across the University. Products include Visual Studio, Windows Server and SQL Server. Software may be installed on personal machines of eligible users. DreamSpark products may only be used for academic instruction, academic projects and noncommercial research. The deadline to apply for membership in Capstone Men and Women is Friday, Jan. 24, by noon. Members of Capstone Men and Women are the official ambassadors for The University of Alabama. They give campus tours to prospective students and assist the University president, administration and trustees with numerous events throughout the year. Join the Camp 1831 tradition. The A-Team is a group of student leaders who serves UA by supporting new students during a three-day program called Camp 1831. A-Team members will also facilitate activities that focus on four themes: adventure, leadership, service, and history and tradition. The Student Judiciary of the Student Government Association is accepting applications for associate justices and clerks. Assisted by three clerks, the chief justice and the 21 associate justices have jurisdiction over a variety of cases, including parking-ticket appeals, football-ticket-penalty appeals, and nonacademic violations of the Code of Student Conduct. Candidates should be reliable, responsible and principled undergraduate, graduate or law students committed to supporting the philosophies of the Code of Student Conduct, the Academic Honor Code, the Code of Academic Conduct and all other guidelines of conduct set forth by the University. Become a Peer Leader and strengthen your overall skillset — including leadership, communication and facilitation — and establish positive relationships with faculty, staff and peers. Peer Leaders serve as role models and mentors to first-year students while helping to facilitate first-year-student courses alongside faculty. These courses are designed to help first-year students adjust to the University, develop a better understanding of campus resources and acquire essential academic success skills. Students are invited to a free workshop on applying for admission to law school. Admissions representatives will walk students through a mock application and discuss the negatives and positives of the application process, as well as provide advice. The Law School Fair will be on Thursday, Jan. 23, from 10 a.m. to -1:45 p.m. at the Hotel Capstone. Admission is free. The Health and Social Services Career Fair will be held Jan. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ferguson Center ballroom. Students from all majors are welcome. First Year Experience will host an event for first-year students who are looking to get further involved on campus. The meet-and-eat event will be held Jan. 28 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Forum. Lunch will be provided. The event will offer giveaways, including a scholarship. Participants will hear from students who are involved in different areas across campus.
The Alabama Center for the Book invites UA students to the next event in the lunchtime speaker series spotlighting recent works by Alabama writers. Lila Quintero Weaver will talk about “Darkroom: a Memoir in Black and White,” her autobiographical novel about growing up Latina in the Black Belt in the 1960s.
