The University of Alabama gymnastics coach has won six national championships in her tenure with the Crimson Tide, but that is not why she is a local celebrity. No, people in the Tuscaloosa community know her as The Pink Lady. Patterson was stopped once while shopping for groceries when someone recognized her because of her Power of Pink initiative, which helps raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer. A woman approached her with a problem: She had no insurance. Patterson wrote down a number for the DCH Foundation Breast Cancer Fund and told the woman there was a fund specifically for people like her. “Is that not one of the most significant things that could have happened to me in my career?” Patterson said. “That I was able to direct somebody how to get help.”
