All tap water will be turned off in the Ferguson Center from midnight Dec. 20 to 7 p.m. Dec. 22 to allow for the installation of two new valves. The outage will also affect the following campus buildings: Woods Hall, Clark Hall, Manly Hall, Garland Hall, Gorgas House, Morgan Hall, Gorgas Library and Smith Hall. Global Fire Sprinkler will manage the flows and tampers on all buildings’ fire-sprinkler systems. Fire hydrants in the area of all buildings affected by the outage will remain in standard operating condition. A fire watch approved by the Tuscaloosa Fire Marshal will be in force during the outage and Security Resources will provide these services. UA’s Office of Information Technology warns students to be aware of a recent phishing email with the subject line “Notification: Your Webmail Upgrade!” The email is an attempt to get students to click on a link that would supposedly upgrade their Crimson mail accounts to a new user interface. The email states that failure to upgrade will result in loss of email accounts. Students who received the email should delete it. Students who answered the email should change their email passwords immediately. Students who need assistance changing their email passwords should contact the IT Service Desk at 348-5555. For more information on phishing, click here.
Identity theft can happen over the telephone. Students should not give out personal information to any automated calls claiming to be from the University. Any automated call from the University’s Office of Receivables and Collections will have a 348 prefix and will direct students to their online student accounts for payments. The Office of Receivables and Collections does not prompt students to make payments on accounts or ask for personal financial information via phone calls.
The Safe Zone program announces its open training schedule for Spring Semester 2014: Jan. 13 (1-4 p.m.), Feb. 12 (9 a.m.-noon), March 10 (9 a.m.-noon), April 11 (1-4 p.m.) and May 1 (1-4.p.m). To register, send an email to safezone@sa.ua.edu. Trainings are free and open to any UA faculty, staff or student wanting to learn more about how to support the LGBTQ population at UA.
The Bryant Museum is offering a 15 percent discount on the purchase of the “Mama Called” documentary and “Inside the Vault” collectors’ book package. Click here for details.
The UA public wireless network will no longer be available starting in January 2014. The Office of Information Technology asks students to set their wireless devices to use the new UA-WPA2 network for a safer Wi-Fi connection. Students can choose the UA-WPA2 connection directly from their wireless devices and log in using their myBama identifications and passwords.
OIT also offers the XPressConnect application to make UA-WPA2 setup easy. Students can open the browsers on their devices and go to http://wpa2setup.ua.edu; read the Acceptable Use Agreement; check the box to accept the agreement; and click on the “Start >” button. XPressConnect will guide users through the configuration of their laptops or mobile devices.
Students who are moving to Apple devices, such as an iPhone or iPad, should tell those devices to forget the UA public wireless network. Doing so will stop the Apple device from trying to reconnect to that wireless network in the future. More information or questions: the OIT Service Desk at 348-5555 or itsd@ua.edu.
