ANNOUNCEMENTS

Weather permitting, the University will test UA Alertsthe emergency public address system and digital signage at 11:55 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6. The test will last approximately 30 seconds and should not be disruptive. Immediately following at noon, the Tuscaloosa Emergency Management Agency will test the outdoor tornado sirens, weather permitting.

Students should update their contact information on myBama to ensure they receive the UA Alerts messages. Students who currently receive the alerts but would prefer to be contacted differently will need to revise their contact information. The University of Alabama will host the Alabama state high school football championships at Bryant-Denny Stadium Dec. 5-6. Teams are still to be decided, but the divisions and game schedules are as follows: Dec. 5 (Class 3A, 11 a.m.; Class 1A, 3 p.m.; Class 5A, 7 p.m.) and Dec. 6 (Class 4A, 11 a.m.; Class 2A, 3 p.m.; Class 6A, 7 p.m.) Details on how the event will affect parking and traffic on campus will be provided closer to the first day of the event. The University of Alabama’s 24-hour hazing and harassment hotline allows students, parents or others to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, hazing or any kind of unhealthy behavior. An individual calling the hotline can leave a confidential message with the Office of the Dean of Students. Callers to the hotline are anonymous. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Graduate Students are invited to submit abstracts for the 2014 Alabama Modern Languages Conference. The conference will take place Feb. 7-8. Graduate students in any discipline are invited to present 20-minute papers in English, Spanish, French or German relating to the theme of “Converging Cultures: Languages, Literatures, and Identity.” The deadline for abstract submission is Nov. 15, 2013. EVENTS

The Student Government Association and the Career Center will provide résumé critiques at Tutwiler Hall today from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and again on Nov. 11 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Presidential Village and Ridgecrest. UA dance majors take a huge step forward in “Dance Alabama!” The student-choreographed production will be performed Nov. 5-7 (7:30 p.m.) and Nov. 8 (5:30 p.m.) in the Morgan Hall auditorium.

The University’s sales program will host Connect 2013, a sales and marketing career fair in the Ferguson ballroom from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 6. More than 40 companies from various industries will be in attendance to hire for full-time and internship positions in sales, marketing and management. All majors and classifications are welcome. The Alabama Center for the Book and The University of Alabama Press invite UA students, faculty and staff and the public to a lunchtime speaker series spotlighting recent works by Alabama writers. The first speaker in the series is Dr. Robert Oliver Mellown, UA associate professor emeritus of art history, who will spotlight his new book, “The University of Alabama: A Guide to the Campus and Its Architecture.” The lecture will be Nov. 7 from noon to 1 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. On Thursday, Nov. 7, alumni from UA working on NASA projects will be on campus to talk with students about the Space Launch System from both an engineering and communication perspective. “Communicating the Future of Exploration” will be at 5 p.m. in 222 Reese Phifer Hall. The event will feature four UA alumni who work on the communication team for the SLS. The University of Alabama’s Capstone International Center will sponsor International Education Week Nov. 11-19. Events include movies, workshops on résumé writing and information about UA’s study-abroad programs. Visit the program’s website for more information.

UA will present a Veterans Day ceremony from 11 a.m. to noon on Nov. 11 on the Quad in front of Gorgas Library. Rain location will be in 205 Gorgas Library. Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Duane Lamb, the UA assistant vice president for facilities and grounds, will be the keynote speaker. A Walk of Champions featuring luminaries is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. the same day on the University Boulevard side of Bryant-Denny Stadium. More events will be posted at http://vets.ua.edu. The Student Government Association invites students to the annual Date Auction and UA Tastes on Nov 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sellers Auditorium at the Bryant Conference Center. Students will have the opportunity to bid on a chance to attend a group dinner date with other UA students, including student athletes, leaders, musicians and artists. Students will also be able to sample food from local Tuscaloosa restaurants and win door prizes. GAME-DAY WEEK

  • Parking Reminder — On game-day weekends during football season, many parking lots are used for Tide Pride and game-day parking. The following lots and areas must be vacated by 5 p.m. on Fridays of all home games: Colonial Drive south of Eighth Street, the south one-third section of the Coleman Coliseum lot, the Tutwiler main lot and “triangle” lot, the lower Student Recreation Center lot, the Northeast Campus Drive lot and the large lot east of the Moody Music Building. Re-entry to all faculty and staff lots, with the exception of the Ferguson deck, will be restricted after 5 p.m. on game-day Fridays. Click here for a map that shows the parking-lot closures.

  • Tailgating Reminder — Tailgating is an important part of every football season, especially on the Quad. Following campus policy for tailgating helps to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable experience. Friday is a regular academic day at UA, and classes are still in session until 6 p.m.; therefore, reserving areas for personal tailgates on the Quad is not permitted until after 6 p.m. on Fridays prior to home games. Reserving all other campus areas is not permitted until after 5 p.m. on Thursday evenings prior to home games. The only areas that are permitted to be reserved prior to these times are those that have been approved in advance through the campus grounds-use permit process.
