Authors series opens Thursday

The University of Alabama Press and the Alabama Center for the Book will host a local author Thursday as part of “Authors @ Gorgas,” a speaker series to highlight Alabama authors and their recent works. The public is invited to attend the free event, which will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library Room 205. Attendees are welcome to bring their lunches. Robert Mellown, associate professor emeritus of art history, will discuss his book, “The University of Alabama: A Guide to the Campus and Its Architecture,” which presents the history and architecture of the university’s campus in the form of guided campus tours.

UA student starts new group to help educate about diabetes

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes affects one in six Americans and half of those who have diabetes don t know. WVUA’s Morgan Wagner has tips for those who have diabetes and for those at risk. President Obama announced on Halloween his decision to declare November National Diabetes Month. A time when many were focused on indulging in their sugary snacks rather than watching out for their health … University of Alabama student, Koushik Kasanagottu, says the reason he hopes to spread awareness for this issue came from his experience of growing up with family members who have the disease.

6 chosen as National FFA officers

Students from Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Iowa, West Virginia and Oregon have been elected by delegates from throughout the U.S. to serve on the 2013-14 National FFA Officer team. Brian Walsh of Virginia, an agribusiness major at Virginia Tech, was elected president. Mitch Baker of Tennessee, an agricultural communications major at University of Tennessee, will serve as secretary. Steven Brockshus of Iowa, an agricultural education and global resource systems major at Iowa State University, was elected Central Region vice president and Jackson Harris of Alabama, a community development major at the University of Alabama, will serve as Southern Region vice president.

13 Guidelines for Kids’ Use of Social Media

… A new policy from the American Academy of Pediatrics is aimed at all kids, including those who use smartphones, computers and other Internet-connected devices. It expands the academy’s longstanding recommendations on banning televisions from children’s and teens’ bedrooms and limiting entertainment screen time to no more than two hours daily … Other than sedentary activity that would be correlated with screen time, the policy also is trying to limit children’s exposure to media advertisements for different types of less nutritious foods such as “junk food,” said Sheena Gregg, president of the Alabama Obesity Task Force and assistant director of the department of health promotion and wellness at the University of Alabama.

City planner speaks on walkability in Tuscaloosa

Improving Tuscaloosa’s walkability can have significant impact on the city’s economy, its footprint and the health of its residents, according to Jeff Speck, a city planner and architectural designer. Speck, who has been featured on NPR, given a TED talk and has been involved in the planning of numerous city centers and communities including Rosemary Beach, spoke to a large crowd of University of Alabama students and Tuscaloosa residents at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center on Monday night about the benefits of planning a city considering walking as transportation versus driving … Speck’s lecture was part of a community event sponsored by the Honors College and the Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility and was organized in part by PlanFirst, a UA Honors College class dealing with city planning for non-majors.
