UA’s Community Service Center Organizes Volunteer Project at Holt Cemetery

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Community Service Center is sponsoring a volunteer service project titled “Schoolhouse Service Stand” to mark the 50th anniversary of desegregation at UA.

The service project will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at Holt Cemetery. The cemetery is on 40th Avenue Northeast in Holt. At least 125 students are expected to participate.

Registration for students will be from 2 to 3 p.m. in Ferguson Plaza. In addition to the service throughthedoors-rlprojects, students are invited to a dinner and reflection from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Ferguson Center, followed by a candlelight walk to Foster Auditorium and a closing ceremony at 8 p.m. at Foster.

The project is designed to educate students on how service and communication can break down social barriers that exist in society and hinder people from moving forward as a unified community.

Students may register online at http://www.volunteer.ua.edu/. For details, contact Kate Bonner, student director, at skbonner1@crimson.ua.edu or 205/499-6565.

The mission of the Community Service Center is to educate students for service advocacy and leadership, civic responsibility, and lifelong volunteerism by increasing awareness of community needs, resources and opportunities for social problem solving.

“Through the Doors” is a year-long series of activities and events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of The University of Alabama and honoring the courage and dedication of the two African-American students who enrolled in the University on June 11, 1963, as well as the University’s ongoing commitment to progress.
