SAFETY 

Each year, The University of Alabama publishes the UA annual Campus Security Report, which contains crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years. The report also details UA security policies and procedures. The Campus Security Report is provided in accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and is available to view or print online at safety.ua.edu. The Alabama Department of Public Safety, a state agency, also provides an online listing of sex offenders currently registered with the state. This listing is available on the Alabama Department of Public Safety website at www.dps.alabama.gov. (Click on the “Community Information Center” link). For information regarding the enrollment or employment of registered sex offenders at The University of Alabama or to request a printed copy of the Campus Security Report, write University Police, Attention: Community Services Division, Box 870180, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0180; or send an email to University Police at ua.police@ua.edu.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 

The Higher Education Act of 1965 requires institutions to make certain information available to the campus community and general public. The University has established a website, http://www.ua.edu/academic/hea, to compile and disclose in one location pertinent information related to the HEA’s requirements. UA students, faculty and staff are encouraged to visit the “Through the Doors” website and contribute their memories and experiences on the Your Stories page under the “Perspectives” link. The Through the Doors website is devoted to the 50th anniversary of UA’s desegregation and also serves as a source of historical information, beginning with Autherine Lucy’s attempt to enroll at UA as the first African-American student in 1956.

Kaplan Test Prep will host free GRE, MCAT and LSAT practice tests for UA students in Lloyd Hall on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 9 a.m. For students who are unable to take one of the practice tests on Oct. 12, Kaplan will also offer free practice tests online through the end of October for the GRE, MCAT, LSAT, GMAT, DAT, OAT and PCAT. SAS 9.4 is now available for download through the University’s enterprise agreement. SAS 9.4 is a limited release for 64-bit operating systems only. Users may continue to use SAS 9.3. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Students are invited to the Fall Majors Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ferguson Center ballroom. Each department will have faculty members present with information on their major requirements and tracks for students to find a major that fits their interests. Students are invited to come and go during the event and to bring their Action Card.

UA students who have Turning Technologies clickers may need to update their firmware for the devices to work properly. Students can do the update themselves by clicking here and following the instructions in the tutorial. Students can have their clickers updated at the University Supply Store locations in the Ferguson Center and in Tutwiler Hall, as well as in Gorgas and Rodgers libraries, and at the Faculty Resource Center in A-203 Gordon Palmer Hall. All UA students are invited to participate in the 2013 Culverhouse Business Concept Pitch. Prizes are $500 for first place, $250 for second place and $100 for third place. Prizewinners will also receive mentoring from successful entrepreneurs to help bring their ideas to life. The deadline to enter the competition is Friday, Oct. 11, at 11:59 p.m. The top 15 pitches will be announced Oct. 24 and be presented live to a panel of judges at 6 p.m. on Nov. 14. STUDENT AFFAIRS 

Housing and Residential Communities will host an off-campus housing fair Wednesday, Oct. 9, on the main floor of the Ferguson Center. UA sophomores, juniors and seniors are invited to apply to be a part of Leadership UA. The goal of the program is to develop effective and ethical leaders at The University of Alabama who are prepared to be global leaders in a variety of fields. The University Awards Committee welcomes applications for UA’s five Premier Awards, the highest honors given by The University of Alabama. The awards are the William P. CAREER DEVELOPMENT

University Programs will host its first ever Around the World of Professionalism career-development workshop Oct. 21 from noon to 2:30 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. Students can rotate among four stations to get tips on interviews, proper dress code and etiquette, essentials of résumé building, and the do’s and don’ts of social media. STUDENT SUPPORT

The Women’s Resource Center provides a full range of services to students, faculty, staff and their families who are victims of dating and domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, sexual harassment, stalking or childhood abuse. To make an appointment, schedule a program, register for self-defense training or volunteer, contact the WRC at 348-5040. To contact a victim advocate after hours or on the weekends, call the University of Alabama Police Department at 348-5454 and ask to be connected with the on-call WRC victim advocate.   • Breast Cancer Awareness, October (The UA community is invited to place messages and pink ribbon ornaments on honor and remembrance trees located at the Capstone Village, Ferguson Center, Student Recreation Center and University Medical Center.)
  • Domestic Violence Awareness Month, October (Campus and community members are asked to raise awareness of dating and domestic violence by wearing purple ribbons and to drop off used cellular phones and accessories at the Women’s Resource Center, Dean of Students’ office and campus residential communities.)

EVENTS

“Late Night Series: Minute Mania” will take place today, 7-9 p.m., in the community room on the seventh floor of Presidential Village. This event is for all UA students and is a spinoff of the game show “Minute to Win It.” Contestants will have 60 seconds to complete a series of trivia questions and games. The University of Alabama Student Health Center’s Department of Health Promotion and Wellness will host the annual fall student health fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, on the Ferguson Center plaza. Free flu shots from the UA Student Health Center will be available to all students, along with food samples from area food establishments, chair massages, and coupons and information from vendors located on campus and throughout the Tuscaloosa community. Admission is free, and the first 200 visitors will receive a free T-shirt.

 UA’s Moundville Native American Festival will be held Oct. 9-12 at Moundville Archaeological Park. Through storytelling, a variety of arts and crafts demonstrations, living history enactments and musical performances, the park’s annual Native American Festival brings to life the Southeastern Indian culture, a culture that is markedly different from the tribes found elsewhere in the Americas. The festival is ranked as one of the finest and most comprehensive events of its kind. Hours: 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Wednesday-Friday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday. Cost is $10 for adults and $8 for children. The University of Alabama Press is extending its summer sale. On Saturday, Oct. 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., visit Room 228 at the UA Press office in the McMillan Building at 200 Hackberry Lane to choose from a selection of more than 200 titles, poster-size cover art, galley proofs and other printed material at special discount prices. Students are invited to Taste of Germany to learn more about the German culture through entertainment, food and cultural representatives. The event will take place Oct. 16 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the community room at Martha Parham Hall. Traditional German décor, a clothing showcase and entertainment will be available. “Three Days at Foster: How Integration Turned the Tide,” a documentary on the integration of UA athletics, will be shown Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theater. Keith Dunnavant, noted sports author and director of the film, will introduce the film and answer questions at the film’s conclusion. The event is sponsored by The University of Alabama National Alumni Association, the College of Continuing Studies and the Division of Community Affairs. Alpha Chi Omega’s “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” relay race to raise awareness of domestic violence will be held Oct. 22 at the corner of Bryant Drive and Colonial Drive. Music and dinner will be provided. Cost is $10 to participate in the event and $1 to attend. Sign-in is 4:30 p.m. on the day of the race. Project Green Challenge is a 30-day eco-lifestyle challenge that began Oct. 1 and will conclude Oct. 30.
