UA Social Work Instructor to Speak at Alabama Perinatal Conference

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Joanne Terrell, an instructor in The University of Alabama School of Social Work, will speak at the 18th Annual Alabama Perinatal Conference.

Terrell will speak on “Mental Illness: Challenges & Strategies to Improve Outcomes.”

The one-day conference, “Multi-Disciplinary Perspectives in Perinatal Care: Translating Recommendations into Action,” will be held Nov. 1 at Rosewood Hall, 2850 19th St. South., in Homewood. The conference lasts from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Terrell said mental health issues regarding pregnant women was the number one requested topic by participants at last year’s conference.

“The reason it is of concern to this audience of health care professionals is because Alabama has a high rate of infant mortality,” Terrell said.

The 18th Annual Alabama Perinatal Conference is a collaborative effort of the March of Dimes Alabama Chapter, Alabama Department of Public Health, UAB Medicine, and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses.
