University of Alabama to offer software engineering concentration

The University of Alabama will begin offering a software engineering concentration this fall, the sixth degree option available within the computer science program. According to the CS website, the concentration’s creation is in response to the growing demand for “skilled, creative technology workers.” Students working toward a computer science degree have been able to take software engineering courses for some time, but the new concentration will officially recognize software expertise, according to a UA press release.

TIDE program reaching out to seniors

The University of Alabama is offering a free program for people over the age of 50 who struggle with insomnia and depression. In Demopolis, the TIDE program is run through the sleep clinic at Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital, and it does not require a referral from a doctor. Treatment of Insomnia and Depression in Elders is a 10-week sleep study program funded through the National Institutes of Health that helps people deal with improve their sleeping habits, as well as their mindsets. “Our goal is to get better psychiatric healthcare to rural areas,” said Ashley Neuhauser, an undergraduate volunteer with the TIDE program. “Patients in the program interact with the doctors through videoconferencing in the local doctor’s office using the program Skype.”

Bethany Keel has been chosen to represent The Donoho School at the 2013 session of American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State, held on the campus of The University of Alabama. For one week, she will become a citizen in an imaginary state, taking part in the political life of her community, primarily through campaigning for and electing city, county and state offices.
