TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A division of the nation’s largest professional organization for journalism and mass communication educators named Dr. Wilson Lowrey, University of Alabama professor of journalism, its 2013 Outstanding Educator.
The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s Newspaper and Online News Division will formally present Lowrey with the award next month.
“I was very surprised to win this award, and I’m very grateful,” said Lowrey, who also serves as graduate program coordinator for UA’s College of Communication and Information Sciences’ journalism department.
“I know the members of this division feel passionately about journalism education, and it’s a huge honor to be recognized by them,” Lowrey said. “I’d add that I’m fortunate to work with so many colleagues who make me better at what I do.”
According to the AEJMC website, the Outstanding Educator Award is open to any journalism professor who is a full-time faculty member of a bachelor degree-granting institution of higher education.
“No one could overstate what an integral part of the faculty here Wilson is,” said Dr. Jennifer Greer, journalism department chair. “The thing that amazes me about him is that he’s such a brilliant researcher but that he’s so connected with the profession and current trends. He moves seamlessly back and forth between the two worlds. His research addresses real-world issues, but it is grounded in theory and is quite complex in the problems it tackles, which is not an easy task. Honestly, he’s just the poster boy for well-rounded academic.”
The award will be formally presented at the AEJMC division’s business/membership meeting.
