TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Andrew Beck Grace, a University of Alabama instructor in telecommunication and film and director of Documenting Justice, led the way for UA filmmakers at the 2013 Southeast Region Emmy Awards, bringing home three wins for his documentary, “The Durrs of Montgomery.”
“Durrs” won for Television Programming Excellence, Documentary — Historical; Craft Achievement, Audio — Post Production; and Craft Achievement, Best Editor (non-news) (tie).
“The Durrs were truly amazing people, and working on this film was a great joy,” Grace said. “It’s an honor to be recognized, and I hope the awards will encourage more people to see the film.”
Mike Letcher, production manager for the Center for Public Television and Radio, won the regional Emmy for Television Programming Excellence, Documentary — Cultural for “In the Path of the Storm.”
“The film is a story about a pretty special Alabama multicultural community,” Letcher said. “It’s also about the ongoing struggle of working-class people in America. It’s encouraging to have both those topics recognized.”
Additionally, Ben Goertz, an adjunct instructor in the telecommunication and film department, and departmental alumni Johnny Hanna and Alex Seiver won an Emmy for Television News and Program Specialty Excellence for Sports — One-Time Special with “Alabama All-Access SEC Preview Special.”
The regional Emmy Awards are given by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Southeast. This region includes stations in Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama and North Carolina.
