UA Broadcast News Students Win ABA Scholarships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Five students from The University of Alabama’s College of Communication and Information Sciences have been named 2013 recipients of scholarships from the Alabama Broadcasters Association Education Foundation.

Each scholarship is worth $3,000 and is awarded to a junior or senior considered to have promise as a future broadcaster. The ABAEF awarded a total of 10 scholarships statewide for 2013. Following is information about the UA students who received awards.

Hannah Mills, of Northport, is a senior telecommunication and film major who has worked with Crimson Tide Productions within The University of Alabama Athletics Department since October 2010 and maintains a 4.0 average.

Katie Malone, of Trussville, is a senior majoring in telecommunication and film.  As a freshman, Malone interned for “Sports Campus,” a talk show on WTBC 1230 AM in Tuscaloosa. She is currently interning with WVUA-TV and maintains a 3.7 average.

Rachel Wilson, of Tuscaloosa, is a senior telecommunication and film major with a focus on electronic news. She writes for her college’s online magazine and also interned with WVUA-TV. She maintains a 3.8 average.

David Spinks Megginson, of Brewton, is a senior telecommunication and film major with a focus on electronic news. He maintains a 3.8 average. He completed an internship with WVUA-TV on campus in May, and this summer he is interning in news and weather at WEBJ radio in Brewton.

Ginger Caroline Cockrell, of Tuscaloosa, is a senior telecommunication and film major with a focus on electronic news. She maintains a 3.1 average.

The Alabama Broadcasters Association Education Foundation provides college scholarships in its pursuit of a higher standard of professionalism in the industry, promoting a greater understanding of ethics and societal responsibility of broadcasters and supporting potential and commitment in rising broadcasters. The Alabama Broadcasters Association serves as the official voice of the broadcasting industry in Alabama.
